Aspirants were disqualified for various reasons including forgery.
Alex Joseph Asuma Amolbuguri Aboka, who was disqualified from contesting the party’s parliamentary primaries in Binduri constituency by the New Patriotic Party (NPP)’s National Assembly Review Committee, has been awarded GH¢20,000 by the Bolgatanga High Court. A fee was charged. The court rejected his application to set aside his disqualification.
The committee disqualified him for the following reasons:
“The decision of the Commission to recommend your disqualification to the National Executive Council (NEC) shall be against you when you appear before the Commission for review on Wednesday 1 January 2024. (a) Forgery of signatures and/or thumbprints on nominations of Clement Afgu and Adamu Mamata, which are criminal offences; (b) Persons under the age of 40 Shortening of date of birth to benefit from the 50% application fee admissible to APC, and (c) Obtaining a Bachelor of Business Administration (Human Resources) degree from Christian Service University College Kumasi, if not already done. even going to school there,” NPP Upper East Regional Secretary Elvis Awonekai Attia said in a letter to Mr. Aboka.
However, the parliamentary aspirant sued the party after the screening committee announced his disqualification. He had asked the court to force him to change his mind that he was ineligible to participate in the primary.
His lawsuit forced the party to postpone the parliamentary primary in the district until a legal resolution to the issue was obtained. His candidate, Abdullahi Abanga, would have been widely acclaimed as the NPP’s parliamentary candidate, but had to wait for the court to rule on the matter.
But today, February 2, 2024, the court dismissed his application as without merit and imposed costs on him of 20,000 cedis.
It is unclear whether Avoca will escalate the case to the next level or accept the court’s decision and pay the fine.
