Retailers in some of Ghana’s major markets are struggling with plummeting sales of women’s underwear.
In a report reported by UTV and cited by Ghanaweb, sellers blamed the poor sales of panties on the refusal of many women to wear panties.
One vendor suggested that the digital age and economic pinch were also to blame.
“Women are not buying underwear as much as they used to because underwear has become much more expensive, partly due to economic issues.
“There are a lot of underwear retailers now, but there are also a lot of online retailers in addition to marketplaces, so people can order from the comfort of their own homes,” she says.
However, she also claimed that the fact that many women choose not to wear panties to feel more comfortable is to blame for the poor sales.
“Women don’t wear them anymore either. Some say they get itchy when they wear them, and others say they’re uncomfortable and have stopped wearing them,” she added.
Her opinion was echoed by other retailers, who blamed the low usage of panties on the hot weather.
One retailer said, “Due to the weather, people are refusing to wear pants to get some fresh air because they get hot and sweaty indoors.”
“The women are no longer wearing panties, they’re just wearing dresses or jackets and pants without panties, so if you look closely you can see their butts swaying as they walk.” said another woman.
“Women are complaining about the heat and refusing to wear panties so air can reach their genitals,” added another.
However, one customer took a different view and said that there is no need to wear panties because it is difficult to be intimate with them.
“You don’t have to wear panties. Panties get in the way when your partner is trying to do something interesting with you,” he said.
