WhatsApp introduced a feature that enhances security without the hassle of remembering complex passwords: Access keys.
This guide will walk you through the process of setting up passwords on WhatsApp, ensuring that your messages remain private and secure.
Step 1: Update WhatsApp
Before you start, make sure your WhatsApp app is updated to the latest version available on the Play Store.
Step 2: Access your password settings
Open WhatsApp and tap the menu icon in the top right corner. Select ‘Settings‘ and after ‘account‘. Here, you will find the ‘Access keysselection.
Step 3: Create your password
Once you get to the Passkeys section, tap “Generate Password”.
Part of your WhatsApp number will be set to be used as a password. Select the correct Gmail account to connect with your WhatsApp account and tap Continue.
Step 4: Authentication
For authentication, use your phone’s screen lock mechanism. You can set the screen lock as the means to access the password in WhatsApp settings by tapping on “Use screen lock”.
Step 5: Confirm your password
To complete the setup, authenticate using one of the available methods: face unlock, fingerprint unlock, the screen lock.
Recall your password
If you decide you no longer wish to use a password, you can easily revoke it. Go to “Settings” > “Account” > “Passkeys” and tap on “Recall‘ under the registered password. Confirm the recall when prompted.
Troubleshooting
If you don’t see the Passkeys option, make sure you have the latest version of WhatsApp. If you are an iOS user, please note that this feature is not yet available for your platform.
