Surveillance cameras captured the arrival and escape of four hoodlums from various angles who threw petrol bombs into the garden of Class Media Group (CMG), based in Labone, Accra.
The incident occurred around 2 a.m. in the early hours of Thursday.
CCTV footage showed two motorcycles carrying two men parked in front of the media house, then lighting a fireball and throwing it into the CMG premises before fleeing.
The bomb shattered a glass door and barrier in CMG’s newly installed reception area.
Police continue to investigate the attack.
Meanwhile, Ghana Independent Broadcasting Association (GIBA) Chairman Cecil Sunkwa Mills described the bombing as “shocking”.
Mr Sunkwa Mills, who spoke with Mr Kwame Dwomo Agyemang on the Class Morning Show on Friday, April 26, 2024, said GIBA discussed the incident late on Thursday night.
“This poses a security concern for radio and television stations, especially at this time of year, and we believe the police should be told exactly what happened,” he said.
“It’s a little difficult now to find out exactly why someone would want to throw a petrol bomb at a TV station,” he said, adding: “There were surveillance cameras that picked up footage of what happened. That’s a blessing,” he added.
“We don’t know the motive behind this attack, we’ve never seen this kind of attack before and we don’t know why someone would do it, so it’s best to wait to see exactly what the police come up with. I think this is good.β So we need to know exactly why this attack happened and it’s simply a matter of ensuring proper maximum security for your station, especially at the point of entry, physical and otherwise. It means you need to reiterate that something is important. Stop the missiles or something. That is very important,β Sunkwa-Mills added.
For now, GIBA does not want to speculate about the motive or people behind the attack, he said.
βWhat we have not yet concluded is whether this attack was politically motivated or not, so we are still in no hurry to pin the blame on any one person or persons. That’s why I said we need to know exactly what happened,” he said, adding, “Feedback that it was a direct response to a particular broadcast your station made. Having gotten that feedback, I said I would like to know a little more about the motivation behind this behavior, unless Class FM tells us a little more. Because you need to know exactly what it is.β
