The Director of Electoral Services at the Electoral Commission (EC), Dr. Sereburu Kuaikou, said the Electoral Commission (EC) had launched an investigation into the bribery allegations involving two officials during Tuesday’s Ejisu by-election.
Two Electoral Commission officials have been arrested after Professor Kingsley Nyarko, an influential New Patriotic Party member and Kwadaso MP, was caught on video handing an election official a white envelope that appeared to contain cash. He resigned to face the investigation.
Dr Kuaiko said the conclusion of the investigation would determine the EC’s next action.
talk to joy newsOhemen Tawia said the contents of the envelope given to the officers following the withdrawal of two interim officers from the Ejisu constituency by-election had not yet been finalized.
“Right now, we shouldn’t crucify them until we do an investigation and get to the root cause, because if you watch (the video), it’s clear that the baggage is being handed to them and people are not doing it. Because they weren’t ready to receive it.”
“So it fell on the table, but who took it when it fell? We don’t know,” he added.
The EC said in a statement that it decided to withdraw because it is committed to upholding its core principles of integrity, truth and transparency.
“The Election Commission took immediate action and terminated two temporary employees while an investigation was conducted.
“The Committee upholds the principles and values of integrity, truth and transparency. These values are reinforced during the training of all temporary staff.
