San Francisco, California and Nairobi, Kenya – Wednesday, May 15, 2024 – d. lightthe global provider of transformative household products and affordable financing for low-income households, is providing 10,000 subsidized solar home systems to refugees who have fled the conflicts in South Sudan and the Democratic Republic of Congo and are now living in refugee camps in Northern and Western Uganda.
The 10,000 units are part of a wider initiative to provide 23,000 solar home systems to Ugandan refugee communities.

The project is financed by a A $3.4 million grant from the Private Sector Foundation of Uganda (PSFU), a body made up of business associations, companies, and public sector agencies in Uganda: and Energizing Development (EnDev), an international program by the governments of Germany, the Netherlands, Norway and Switzerland to provide access to affordable, reliable, sustainable energy to achieve social, economic and environmental change.
The project started in April and is scheduled to last 12 months. Funds from the grant are subject to results-based funding (RBF) and d.light will only receive funding for solar home systems installed. Each d.light solar home system features three high performance LED lights, an FM radio with MP3 playback, mobile phone charging capability and a portable solar flashlight.

Commenting on the news, d.light Managing Director for Uganda Douglas Gavala he said, “With this grant, we can expand the important work we do to improve living conditions for underserved refugee communities from South Sudan, DRC and elsewhere living in refugee camps in Uganda.
“A solar home system greatly improves a household’s quality of life and well-being – whether it’s providing entertainment, letting a family catch up on local and world news on the radio, or enabling children to continue reading and studying after dark .
“In addition to the benefits at home, d.light products also boost household income in Ugandan refugee settlements by extending working hours for traders and small businesses and providing income to residents who work as d.light vendors in the settlements.
“By providing high-quality solar products at an affordable price, we are improving the quality of life for displaced people while encouraging grassroots economic activity.”
