Ghanaian musician and human rights activist Deborah Vanessa, aka Sister Darby, has claimed that the anti-LGBT+ bill is a politically motivated attempt by the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) to tarnish the reputation of the current president. .
In an interview with YouTuber Kwadwo Sheldon that aired on March 5, 2024, she said that attempts by politicians in government to push this bill are not for the well-being of Ghanaians, but for the well-being of Ghanaians. He implied that it was not for the president’s well-being, but as a way to tarnish the president’s reputation. International community.
She said former President John Dramani Mahama would not support the bill if voted into power.
“The reason is that the opposition just wants to make the current president look bad. They just want to mess with his reputation and push him into a corner.
“If he (Mr Mahama) had been in power, he would not have passed this bill. I think he would have delayed it,” she said.
Sister Darby supported her claim, pointing to the “careful language” used by key members of the opposition NDC.
She argued that they are refusing to directly support the bill, but are instead expressing their personal beliefs against same-sex marriage.
“If you look at their comments, they have not explicitly said that they are in favor of this bill. They choose their words very wisely. They are very selective. ‘My faith supports the same thing. It’s sex marriage.”
“But no one is asking for same-sex marriage. No one is asking for marriage,” she said.
Ghana’s Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill is a bill that has been approved by the Ghanaian parliament and awaits the signature of the president.
This includes several provisions that impose severe restrictions on LGBT+ rights, including prison terms for same-sex sex, involvement in distributing LGBT+ materials, and participation in LGBT+ associations.
