The $145 million Boltejman Sports Complex has begun hosting church services just three months after hosting the 2023 African Games.
The multi-purpose facility was completed ahead of the tournament held in Ghana earlier this year.
A video posted on social media site “X” (formerly Twitter) shows people praying inside one of the multi-purpose facility’s domes.
The video sparked outrage on social media and raised questions about the maintenance of the facility.
Joy Sports investigations revealed that the service was organised by leaders of Christ Embassy Legon Central who did not have permission to organise the event.
Joy Sports sources said the leadership of the Students Representative Council (SRC) of the University of Ghana and the church have written to the National Sports Authority (NSA) seeking permission to take some students on a tour of the facility, which has become something of a tourist attraction after the Olympics.
Joy Sports understands that NSA officials were shocked to discover that church services were taking place on the premises, catching authorities off guard.
Other non-Christian students taking part in this so-called “SRC Fan Trip” were also reportedly outraged by the decision to make the trip a church event.
Following the incident, which occurred on June 1, 2024, the SRC issued a letter of apology, which has been confirmed by Joy Sports.
When Joy Sports contacted the NSA for comment, they said they have been aware of the incident from the start and are currently investigating.
The Boltejman Sports Complex facility includes a 1,000-seat swimming pool and a multipurpose sports hall that can accommodate 1,000 spectators for various events including basketball, badminton, netball, table tennis and weightlifting. There are also 500-seat temporary domes for handball, volleyball, judo, karate, taekwondo and arm wrestling, as well as five tennis courts.
