Ghanaian artist Foster Sakyiamah filed a lawsuit against Ghanaian artist and businessman Joseph Awuah-Darko in an Accra court on June 24, 2024, over several unpaid artworks. The lawsuit seeks $266,527 in damages.
Details of the lawsuit
Adoptive Sakyiamah shared details. He said Joseph Awuah-Darko discovered his work on Instagram in the summer of 2021. He said Mr. Awuah-Darko offered to work with him through his company, JAD Advisory Limited. An agreement was signed in 2021 and Mr Awuah-Darko was appointed as Mr Sakyiamah’s agent to promote, exhibit and sell his artwork for 36 months.

After the agreement, Mr. Sakyiamah won the Noldor Artist Residency in Accra and had to create 21 works. For these, he was paid $3,000 and provided with studio space.

In March 2023, at the end of the 36-month deal, the statement said $338,886.98 had been paid to the artist in 17 cash deposits and wire transfers made between December 2021 and then. The statement also listed a net revenue share payable of $266,527.03.
Mr. Sakyamah he said that when he realized that Awuah-Darko was keeping his money, over $200,000, he decided not to give him another job.
The agreement also stated that JAD would take 40 per cent of the profits from each sale, after which it would deduct costs and expenses from Mr Sakyiamah’s 60 per cent share.

YEN.com.gh reported that a Nigerian videographer called out Ghanaian dance music musician Shatta Wale for owing him arrears for about 13 videos made.
In a video, he recounted how he had chased Shatta Wale and his manager, Sammy Flex, to pay the money he was owed. He also saluted Nigerian musicians like Davido, Asake and others who have always appreciated the works of creatives.
