The editor-in-chief of Insight newspaper has advised National Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, John Mahama, to prioritise improving the living conditions of Ghanaians if elected president.
Kwesi Pratt Jr said the former president should focus on that rather than prosecuting appointees of the Akufo-Addo administration.
“In any case, what Ghanaians most want is for the new government to work diligently to improve access to health, education, nutrition and transport for its people. That’s what we need.”
“What’s the point in cramming people into prisons if we can’t meet the needs of our people? The new administration’s most important task will be to make life more bearable for our people.”
“That will be the hallmark of the new administration and by that it will be judged,” he said at the Professor John Evans Atta Mills 12th Anniversary Lecture.
Pratt stressed that Mahama could face challenges from the judiciary and other public authorities, which could hinder the prosecution process.
“Perhaps it would be useful to warn the incoming Mahama administration that it will not be easy to prosecute criminals under an Akufo-Addo administration. It is not an easy task and it is not going to happen.”
“You have to fight the judiciary and there are other factors and systems that will hinder that effort,” he said.
Pratt was speaking as special speaker at the 12th anniversary celebrations of the Atta Mills Memorial Lecture, held on Friday, July 19, 2024, at the University of Ghana.
The event was attended by notable personalities including Speaker of National Assembly, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, former President, John Dramani Mahama, former Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, Sophia Akufo, Professor Naana Jane Opoku Agyemang and other dignitaries.
