A total of 2,731 infrastructure projects have been completed by the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund) between 2019 and 2023, the administrator of the fund, Dr. Richard Ampofo-Boadu, has announced.
These projects include 1,430 at basic school level, 1,144 at high school level and 138 at tertiary education level.
In addition to this, 15 E-blocks, two Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) centers and two model schools initiated by the previous government have also been completed.
Dr. Boadu, who disclosed this at a stakeholder forum organized by the foundation in Accra on November 7, said that some of the completed projects include what has come to be known as legacy projects initiated by previous governments. He said it also includes things like that.
He said about GH¢800 million had been paid to the contractors awarded these projects to date, which accounted for about 96% of the cost.
The theme of the forum was “Innovation: Essential for achieving positive outcomes” and was attended by academia, civil society organizations, students and the media.
Dr Boadu said the foundation had introduced innovations in its operational management, which had significantly improved efficiency.
Meanwhile, the Minister of Education, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutum, said education and infrastructure is the means to transform teaching and learning in schools and promote a quality education system that prepares students for the job market. Stated.
He said that students need a better learning environment to perform better, which gives them an opportunity to upgrade their education.
Dr Adutum said GETFUND through the Ministry of Education has prioritized Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) and has built several STEM schools and centers to encourage and train students.
“This will allow us to increase the proportion of students enrolled in STEM-related courses compared to those enrolled in humanities programs.
“The GETFUND scholarship program also focuses on STEM education while ensuring equity for all students pursuing various programs for the betterment of our country,” he said.
Dr Adutum said that despite the GETFUND scholarship and infrastructure programme, the government, through the Ministry of Education, was also embarking on school construction efforts with funding from international partners.
He pointed out that the Kuwaiti government is building three STEM high schools in the country through the GETFund forum, and the Arab Development Bank is also supporting the government with some high school infrastructure projects.
