The The Super Eagles of Nigeria have dropped one place again from 38th to 39th in the world based on the latest FIFA rankings, PUNCH Sports Extra References.
According to the list released on Thursday by world football’s governing body, the three-time African champions remained the fifth best team on the continent.
The update to the rankings comes after the conclusion of the recent international competitions, the European Championship in Germany and the Copa America in the USA.
In June, Nigeria fell eight places in the world rankings and overturned the impressive points tally they collected at the African Cup of Nations earlier this year.
The significant drop is due to uninspiring results in the final round of World Cup 2026 qualifiers. The Eagles drew 1-1 against South Africa in their fourth qualifier and lost 2-1 to Benin Republic in their next match.
In the world football rankings, the Nigerian team still maintained the coefficient of 1,498.93 points it had in June.
The top three countries remain unchanged on the continent, with Morocco (14) coming out on top ahead of Senegal (19) and Egypt (36) respectively. Ivory Coast is 38th in the latest ranking, placing fourth in Africa.
Argentina, who successfully defended their Copa AmΓ©rica title last weekend, remain world number one ahead of second-placed France.
The Albiceleste double their points lead over Les Blues in the process. However, Spain, the Euro 2024 champions, earned the most points and moved up five to third, ahead of England and Brazil in the top five.
The next FIFA World Ranking will be announced on September 19, 2024.
